Machine intelligence(MI) has received unparalleled attention and investment in recent years. We here at UTMIST (University of Toronto Machine Intelligence Student Team) aim to bring understanding to the technology such that it can grow organically. At University of Toronto, we are in the unique position of being surrounded by renowned researchers and companies at the frontier of the field. This allows us to prepare and host a variety of events to address the needs of students with limited access to MI education, build a community that encourages students to share their experience and complement the learning of those with academic access to MI.

There already exists many MI courses and MI-specialized programs in Computer Science and Engineering Faculty. While these courses and programs can usually help students build a strong theoretical foundation, they sometimes lack the first-hand perspectives from the frontier researches, which are essential for students to enter the industry and academia. Our Paper Reading Group event brings authors of latest papers in the field to discuss their research with students. This is a nice complement to their foundational knowledge and gives them a well-rounded perspective of the field. These discussions are technically involved and thus helps to demystify the research.

A large number of students outside of CS/Engineering are also quite interested in MI, but apart from online resources such as Udacity and DataCamp, involvement with the MI community at UofT requires great initiatives. Our MIST101 workshop series is essentially an introductory course to machine learning and is open to everyone. We hope the beginners can get inspired by the introductions guided by people with solid knowledge in machine learning and learn more in the future.

Apart from these, we also recruit students into teams to work on hands-on projects. This is a great opportunity for experienced enthusiasts to contribute to the community and for newbies to be mentored and connected within the field.

What’s on Medium?

UTMIST has received quite amazing popularity at the University since we launched in 2017. To better help our club members and other MI enthusiasts like you, we will be posting detailed recounts and a re-structured delivering of the weekly paper reading group, MIST101, and talk series event on Medium. We hope that creating this new platform for pure academic contents can strengthen your learning experience at UTMIST. Through reading the articles and interacting with other readers, you will be able to learn new concepts, extend your thinking and discuss your thoughts with fellows. Let’s clear the mist of Machine Intelligence together!
